We always use the time between Christmas and New Year to reflect on the past year - and prepare ourselves for entering the new year.
We spend time decluttering, sorting, and cleaning. It's an important tradition in our home and is largely a symbolic act of a new beginning. Here are some simple steps for how to approach your New Year's cleanup.
Remember, good music and perhaps a notepad where you note some important thoughts about the year that passed. What you want to bring into the new year - and what you need to let go of.
Clear Out and Organize
Start by decluttering your home. Go through all drawers and cabinets - and consider if there's anything you no longer use. Pass it on to recycling or others you know who would be happy to have it.
It makes it far easier to keep your home tidy if you only keep what’s useful and necessary in your home. It's the perfect time to organise drawers, cabinets, etc. Consider if new systems are needed in your home. This could be for the refrigerator, wardrobe, recycling/waste sorting, etc.
Create Overview
When you're ready to clean, dust off and wash surfaces room by room. Afterwards, you can take all mirrors, refrigerator, freezer, etc. Finally, vacuum, clean skirting boards, and wash floors.
Personal Touch
We always finish the annual New Year's cleaning with a bouquet of flowers for the coffee table and dining table. We usually choose white flowers which symbolise purity. We select an essential oil such as citrus, which spreads its fragrance in the home, and then we make a tray with block candles. We always have a tray out with either fruit or vegetables to inspire us towards the healthy lifestyle we've promised each other.
Happy New Year - we hope you have a great start to 2025!
